Big Brother's new eye on the city

Date: 16/5/08

Author: MATT WILLIAMS, CITY EDITOR

Source: Adelaide Now

Adelaide CamerasTHE Gouger St shootout has prompted plans for more closed-circuit television camera surveillance in the CBD.

By the end of the year, Adelaide City Council will increase the number of its CCTV cameras by 14 to 52 – seven of which will be in the East End by the end of next month – but this is likely to expand further because of the May 4 shootings.

The number of cameras in the city does not include those installed by government departments, financial institutions, licensed premises and other businesses.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison told The Advertiser the council would receive a briefing on the shootout from the Police Commissioner's office on Tuesday.

It was expected to discuss the use and effectiveness of CCTV cameras around the city.

"You can always have more cameras," Mr Harbison said, pointing to their success in helping catch criminals. A gun-wielding offender in the Gouger St shooting was captured on a private CCTV camera, which led to many calls from the public to Crime Stoppers.

"All the people involved in the Gouger St shooting would have been very surprised at the level of surveillance they were under that night," Mr Harbison said.

"It is patently clear that surveillance cameras work to good effect and they can make a big difference in capturing offenders."

Mr Harbison said Adelaide had a "long history" of having the best CCTV coverage of any of the major Australian cities.

This week, police arrested a male owner of a car in connection with the Gouger St incident.

He was questioned over the shootings and later arrested on an outstanding parole warrant, which was issued after the gunfight.

Police are still seeking information about the shootout, which involved up to 15 shots being fired.
