Orange businesses will be asked to consider installing a security camera at their premises as part of a closed-circuit TV (CCTV) system for the city.

Orange City Council is waiting to sign off on $150,000 in federal funding that has been committed for a system of nine or 10 CCTV cameras.

The chairman of the Orange Community Safety and Crime Prevention Committee, Glenn Taylor, says it is sending letters to businesses in the CBD inviting them to be part of the scheme.

"Because these cameras are wireless we could also look at expanding to other areas in the future, that could be industrial areas or other areas where business is located, so that would give police the opportunity to also monitor those areas if they have problems there," he said.

Councillor Taylor says a meeting next Tuesday will discuss the potential costs to businesses and the benefits.

"The advantage of what we're looking at here is we could have businesses that are on the outer reaches of the CBD that could give us coverage which we wouldn't have with the nine or 10 cameras that the council are proposing to put in a the moment," he said.

"It could reduce break and enters, it could reduce vandalism and it could reduce their insurance costs."
