The Hobart City Council is to investigate the installation of security cameras on the Hobart waterfront.

It's hoped they'll curb anti-social behaviour in the Salamanca precinct.

The council's general manager, Brent Armstrong, says police have been asked to comment on where best to place the cameras.

"One of them being perhaps a security camera or two just in a couple of areas where large numbers of people congregate at the one time late at night," Mr Armstrong said.

"That of course is around the taxi ranks, that sort of a place," he said.
