The Queensland Government is preparing to upgrade the closed circuit television (CCTV) monitoring of inmates in the police watch-houses at Doomadgee and Mornington Island in the state's north.

The $1.5 million upgrade program is one of the police reforms recommended in a report tabled in State Parliament after the 2004 Palm Island riots.

Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says the first CCTV upgrades will be carried out next month in Aurukun, Palm Island and Woorabinda.

"When you do something of this magnitude, it's always good to have a couple first that you do as the initial ones in the trial, so if there are any faults or bugs in the system you can iron them out and apply that learning to the next ones," he said.

"I haven't got a precise time frame, but hopefully they'll all be done as soon as possible and your two main local ones here, obviously Doomadgee and Mornington, will be done soon too."
