Square security aided by cameras

HURSTVILLE Council has approved the installation of a security camera system in Memorial Square.

The council will allocate $70,000 towards the costs of the installation from funds set aside for Hurstville town improvement.

Hill Street Tavern, the Meridian Hotel and Sunny's Restaurant have each contributed $10,000 to the project as the security camera system will be in the vicinity of their business.

The council is looking into installing security cameras along Forest Road.

Meridian Hotel licensee Heather Hazelle said the security camera system would ensure the safety of the community.

''It is more of a deterrent and we have assisted police a number of times with the footage from our own system so this will add to the crime prevention,'' she said.

The approval follows a request from Hurstville police based on anecdotal evidence that suggested antisocial activity has recently increased in the area and that the use of a security camera system could assist police in countering this increase.

Hurstville local area commander, Superintendent Adam Purcell, who had initially approached the council with the proposal of security cameras, said the CDB was a crime hot spot.

''There is a large congregation of young people in that area and elderly people are also there because it is the bus and rail interchange so there is a perception that it's not safe,'' Mr Purcell said.

''It's a good idea to have these cameras in a concentrated area of Hurstville.

''I think it will make the community feel safer just knowing that the cameras are there.''

Mr Purcell said that the first stage of the security camera system would have been implemented by mid-year.
