(West Columbia-AP) March 8, 2007 - West Columbia police have obtained a tiny camera that can be tucked into an officer's uniform to help fight domestic violence.

The camera and microphone are about the size of a button. They are not hidden.

Police Chief Dennis Tyndall says domestic violence cases often rely solely on the testimony of an officer. Tyndall says the camera allows a judge or jury to see the fear a victim exhibits and the injuries and damage at the time of the assault.

The department plans to buy six of the $900 cameras.

The microphone and camera can be turned on and off by the officer, but the recording can not be edited.

Joyce Cheeks with the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is concerned about who will have access to the videos and how they will be stored.
