Here in North Dakota we would like to think our children are safe but not being proactive can mean danger which is why one rural North Dakota school is getting ready to make some security changes.
Anyone can walk through the front doors of Garrison High School...and even though the signs tells visitors to report to the office, not everyone may choose to obey.
"One of the latest ideas is to install security cameras and of course it allows you to monitor what is going on in the school," says Steve Brannan, Garrison Superintendent.
High School Principal Mark Larson recently brought an idea to the school board, place security cameras throughout the school.
"It acts a little bit as a deterrent for some behavior you would like to discourage," says Larson. "It makes students more aware of their actions. It is always nice to have a record of things that happen."
Larson`s idea sparked discussion. Currently the board is considering installing 16 cameras throughout both the elementary school and high school.
"The parking lot is a hub of activity even through the weekend and it is not always positive. The feeling was, lets look into this issue," says Brannan.
Not only would administration be able to monitor their students but the local law enforcement would be able to tap into the technology as well.
"It would be nice to have these cameras here if the unthinkable does happen," says Larson.
"I am not going to say it is not going to happen here cause that is when it will happen," adds Brannan.
The hope is to never have to use the security cameras for major threats, but if that day ever came Garrison Schools will be ready.
The cameras could cost as much as 17 thousand dollars.
If the School Board decides on the security cameras they could be installed as soon as next school year.
