Warning to thieves

TO A would-be thief the latest police tool to tackle car crime looks like an everyday object you might expect to find in a car. In reality, police are turning the tables on criminals using hidden cameras and ‘trap cars' to catch car crooks in action.

Hi-tech mini cameras disguised as a variety of mundane objects are a valuable £5,000 tool for police and their message to thieves is clear - you are being watched.

The cameras are put in unmarked cars which are parked in crime hotspots and programmed to react to movement. Anti-social behaviour officer PC Dougy Pye said: "When a person breaks into the car it triggers the camera. "As soon as a face or hand comes into view it starts taking as many photos as humanly possible."

The memory card can store up to 10,000 high resolution pictures that can be used to identify the thief and as evidence in court.
