Sydney airport cameras pointed in wrong direction

Date: 6/4/2006

The Federal Opposition says there has been a major breach of security in the Sydney Airport baggage handling area.

Labor MP John Murphy says the breach was revealed to him by Customs Minister Chris Ellison in an answer to a question on notice.

He says that between October 2004 and May 2005, two security cameras had been pointed in the wrong direction on three separate occasions.

Mr Murphy says it is a serious security breach.

"They're supposed to be pointing, as I understand it, at the conveyor belts that convey the luggage and cargo of passengers," he said.

"It's there for obvious reasons so that if someone interferes with someone's baggage, after its been checked in, there's a permanent record of it."

Corby's former lawyer Robin Tampoe says he is furious that new information about the security breaches was not made public earlier.

"These are all things that they knew, things that we were screaming and begging for in terms of our defence of Schapelle Corby, but it was denied to us," he said.

"Her appeal process has been exhausted now and where I sit, I'm just very angry about it."

Mr Murphy says the news may have ramifications for recent high-profile legal cases.

"I'm sure Schapelle Corby's legal team would like to know precisely when the first breach occurred because I understand she went through Sydney Airport on October 8 2004," he said.

"There was a big cocaine scandal also at that time. What's going on out there at Sydney airport?"
