Market for spy cams proliferates

As the market for hidden cameras and recorders explodes, increasingly sophisticated equipment are now freely available.

The capital's digital and electronic goods centre, Palika Bazaar, is a paradise for spy cam hunters.

At Palika, one can choose between:

* The simple lens camera – it's available for as less as Rs 500 and can go up to Rs 1500. The small lens unit is attached to a cordless receiver, which can then be connected to a television set and even a recorder.

* The bag camera - a smaller version of the handy cam. It operates on either a digital mini tape or memory sticks. Special bags are available with a viewfinder to hide the bag and let the lens do its duty. It costs around Rs 10,000-15,000 for a local make and goes up to Rs 50,000 for a branded company.

* The button camera - the most popular device for sting operations. It costs around Rs 35,000 for a Chinese make. A transmitting device transfers all visuals to a recorder that can be placed up to 200 meters away from the camera. This camera is only available on order.

"Earlier, we could hardly sell these cameras. Now we sell about five-six pieces everyday," said a shopkeeper.

And as sting operations proliferate, so has the market for spy cam detectors, which track frequencies emitted by camera transmitters.

One of the most popular spy cam detectors is the RF tracker, which tracks the RF signals emitted by a hidden camera.

These detectors, once the preserve of defence and intelligence agencies, cost as much as Rs 30,000 and can only be bought through agents.

But given the recent string of stings, sales are likely to spiral as anyone with a public profile is now a potential customer.
