Cameras In Taxis Mandatory By October

Mississauga City Council endorsed a report making security cameras mandatory in all City of Mississauga taxi-cabs by October. The Public Vehicle Advisory Committees' (PVAC) recommendations were unanimously passed by Council yesterday.

PVAC hopes the move to install cameras in taxis will deter violent robberies. In addition the committee has recommended that drivers of public vehicles other then taxi-cabs complete a Robbery Prevention course, as a condition of their driver's licence renewal in 2007.

"We believe that cameras in taxis will give cab drivers and patrons a greater peace of mind," said Ward 7 Councillor Nando Iannica, chair of PVAC. "It's an excellent safety measure," he added.

According to the report, members of the industry had initial concerns about the installation cost of the cameras. Drivers were concerned with the additional cost estimate of $700-$800 per cab, without a way to recover costs. Staff believe that security camera costs can be recovered in future fare increases.

There are 592 licensed taxis in Mississauga, including 152 working out of Pearson International Airport. Security cameras will be required for all taxis with a fare meter.

PVAC, established in 1974, is an advisory committee to Council which deals with a wide variety of issues of concern to the taxicab and limousine industries. The membership of the PVAC is comprised of two members from City Council, two members selected from the general public and eight members from the taxi-cab and limousine industry.

About the City of Mississauga Mississauga is Canada's sixth largest city with a population of more than 680,000. With well-established infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities, the City delivers quality municipal programs and services to its citizens. Mississauga is recognized as Canada's safest city.
