Cameras focused on crime

Seven new spy cameras placed in the borough's crime hotspots have already been hailed a success just weeks after being installed.

The cameras, erected at a cost of £250,000, were put in place in a bid to quell people's fears following a series of violent crimes last year in Palmers Green and Edmonton.

A thug has already been arrested after he was caught on camera stabbing a victim in the street.

Enfield Council chiefs are sure the cameras, which are being monitored 24 hours a day by staff at the authority's community safety centre in Edmonton, will help bring down levels of crime in the borough.

The devices have been placed outside the Fox pub in Green Lanes, Palmers Green, at the junction of Green Lanes and Alderman's Hill, and in Church Street, Edmonton, as well as Enfield Town, Southbury, Edmonton Green and Silver Street train stations.

Cllr Ertan Hurer, the council's cabinet member for community safety and development, said: "These new measures will go a long way towards not only improving public safety and helping allay the fears of residents after a spate of incidents in the designated areas, but tackle the general problem of violent and yobbish behaviour in our communities."

Chief Supt Simon O'Brien, borough commander, added: "It is especially important that rail stations were targeted due to the problem of travelling criminals and the cameras at such strategic points will do a lot to help cut crime and make it safer for the travelling public."
