More security cameras being installed at high school

Chester — While students are enjoying their winter recess next week, workers will be busy installing 16 cameras at the Chester Academy.

The Academy already has 16 cameras, inside and out. These additional 16 cameras will better cover the interior of the school, according to Helen Anne Livingston, Chester’s superintendent of schools.

“Outside is covered fully,” said Livingston. “These additional cameras are better cameras, work better in low light, and will cover areas in the school that are not covered well now.”

Cameras are installed for the general safety of the students, according to Livingston, and are hopefully a deterrent to those who are thinking of doing something unlawful.

“Cameras have been used to help catch vandals,” she said. “We’ve used the cameras for that purpose. But, overall, the incidence of problems has decreased this year.”

Livingston said she believes the cameras are helpful in the case of an emergency but also to give kids something to think about before doing something stupid.

“Cameras are a backup,” she said. “Discipline is what keeps kids in check. Structure, organization, and discipline.”

The cameras were a budgeted item.
